Product Introduction:

O-Toluidine (chemically known as 2-methylaniline) is an important organic intermediate with the molecular formula C7H9N and an important chemical structure featuring an ortho-methylation, where its methyl group (-CH3) on benzene rings alternates with amino groups (-NH2). This structure confers it unique chemical properties such as high reactivity and selectivity. From its physical properties standpoint, O-Toluidine presents as a colorless to light yellow oily liquid at room temperature with faint aromatic aroma; its boiling point at around 200degC; its relative density at 1.008; slightly soluble in water but easily solubed by organic solvents like ethanol or ether; melting point at -16degC; easy crystallization at lower temperatures.

O-Toluidine production on an industrial level primarily utilizes the nitrotoluene reduction method. Raw material o-nitrotoluene serves as the basis for this reduction reaction, with iron powder or hydrogen as catalysts, followed by purification steps such as neutralization, distillation and other means to obtain its finished product.
This process places stringent requirements on controlling reaction conditions to ensure optimal conditions, in order to avoid excessive reduction or by-product formation. Recently, due to tightening environmental protection regulations, some companies have turned to catalytic hydrogenation technology in place of traditional iron powder reduction methods to decrease wastewater discharge and increase product purity.

O-Toluidine amino group can contribute to reactions such as diazotization and acylation, while the presence of methyl influences its site selectiveness for substitution reactions on benzene rings – for instance in dye synthesis where its ortho-para positioning effect allows specific positions to enter preferentially for dye production.
Furthermore, O-Toluidine’s easy formation under acidic conditions expands its range of applications.

O-Toluidine must be handled carefully to protect both its safety and toxicological properties. Studies have shown that O-Toluidine can enter human bodies through skin contact, inhalation or ingestion and over long exposure may damage blood, liver and nervous systems as well as be listed by IARC as Class 2B carcinogen. Therefore, industrial production facilities must strictly implement closed operation, local ventilation measures and personal protection measures, while concentration in working environments should be closely monitored regularly.
