Product Introduction:
Methyl Cellulose is a nonionic cellulose ether made from natural cellulose through chemical modification. It is a white or off-white fibrous or granular powder, odorless and tasteless, with good solubility. It can be dissolved in cold water to form a transparent colloidal solution, but is almost insoluble in hot water. In its molecular structure, about 27% to 32% of the hydroxyl groups exist in the form of methoxy groups, and its molecular weight ranges from 10,000 to 220,000 Da. Different degrees of polymerization and degrees of substitution give Methyl Cellulose a variety of excellent properties.
The production process of Methyl Cellulose mainly includes the pretreatment of cellulose raw materials, alkalization reaction, etherification reaction, and subsequent purification and drying. Usually, wood pulp or cotton pulp is used as raw material, first mixed and soaked with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution to form alkali cellulose, then crushed and aged to adjust the degree of polymerization, then etherified with chloromethane, and finally washed, decolorized, dried and other processes to obtain the finished product. The degree of substitution is one of the important indicators to measure the performance of Methyl Cellulose. The general product contains 26% to 33% methoxyl groups, and the corresponding degree of substitution is 1.7 to 2.2. When the degree of substitution is between 1.3 and 2.6, it is soluble in solvents such as water, pyridine, and glacial acetic acid; and when the degree of substitution reaches 2.4 to 2.8, it is soluble in polar organic solvents.
Methyl Cellulose has excellent physical and chemical properties, such as good water retention, dispersibility, stability and film-forming properties. At room temperature, its aqueous solution is quite stable, but gelation will occur at high temperatures, and this gelation process is reversible. As the temperature decreases, the gel will turn into a solution. In addition, Methyl Cellulose has good impermeability to oils and fats, and the film formed has excellent toughness, flexibility and transparency. It can be compatible with other emulsifiers, but it is also prone to salting out under certain conditions.
These characteristics of Methyl Cellulose make it widely used in many fields and is an important chemical raw material and additive. It is highly safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It is widely used in the food, medicine, daily chemical and other industries.

As an important functional excipient, Methyl Cellulose has core application value in the pharmaceutical field. In oral preparations, its viscous solution properties are used to prepare slurries, which can not only mask the odor of the drug, but also prolong the action time of the active ingredients in the digestive tract. In topical preparations, as a suspension, it can effectively prevent the sedimentation of solid particles and ensure the uniformity of dosage. In modern preparation technology, its film-forming property is used to develop sustained-release coating materials, and the drug release rate is controlled by adjusting the solution concentration and molecular weight. In the field of ophthalmic preparations, low-viscosity models are often used in artificial tears, which prolong the corneal contact time with good bioadhesion.
In the food industry, Methyl Cellulose plays multiple functions as a food additive (INS No. E461). In baked products, its water retention and film-forming properties can delay starch retrogradation and maintain the soft texture of the product; in frozen foods, it improves the taste by inhibiting the growth of ice crystals; in the development of plant protein meat, its thermal gel properties can simulate the structure of animal muscle fibers, becoming an important texture improver for vegetarian products. It is worth noting that compared with other hydrophilic colloids, Methyl Cellulose has a unique “hot gel-cold dissolution” property, which is particularly suitable for food systems that need to maintain their shape after thermal processing.
The application of Methyl Cellulose in the cosmetics industry focuses on its rheological modification and film-forming properties. In emulsion systems, it can prevent oil-water stratification as a stabilizer; adding it to shampoo products can increase viscosity and reduce the amount of irritating surfactants; styling products use its film-forming properties to form a breathable protective film, taking into account both styling effects and comfort. In recent years, its application in sunscreen products has been expanded, and the uniform distribution of active ingredients and improved water resistance are achieved by regulating viscosity.
The construction field is an important application market for Methyl Cellulose, accounting for more than 40% of its industrial use. Compared with traditional additives, Methyl Cellulose remains stable in alkaline environments and has better compatibility with cement systems. It has become an indispensable functional component of modern building materials.
The textile printing and dyeing industry uses the film-forming and adhesive properties of Methyl Cellulose to develop environmentally friendly processing aids. As a thickener in printing slurries, the penetration depth of dyes can be accurately controlled; in the fiber finishing process, the transparent film formed can give fabrics antistatic and anti-pilling properties. Compared with synthetic polymer additives, Methyl Cellulose has better biodegradability and is in line with the development trend of green manufacturing. In addition, it is used as a surface sizing agent in the papermaking industry to improve the tensile strength and printability of paper.
From the perspective of product advantages, the core competitiveness of Methyl Cellulose lies in its multifunctional integration. Its thickening effect is remarkable, and the viscosity of a 0.5% aqueous solution can reach tens to tens of thousands of mPa·s, and it has shear-thinning properties, which is convenient for processing and operation. It has outstanding stability advantages and can still maintain functional properties under extreme conditions such as high-temperature sterilization (120°C) and frozen storage (-20°C), which is particularly important for medicines and foods that require harsh processing conditions. Methyl Cellulose has a unique ability to regulate penetration, which can not only form a barrier film to delay the migration of substances, but also promote the transdermal absorption of active ingredients. This two-way regulation ability is irreplaceable in transdermal drug delivery systems.
Process adaptability is another significant advantage of Methyl Cellulose. By adjusting the degree of substitution and degree of polymerization, customized products of different specifications can be produced. For example, the high viscosity type (40000mPa·s) is suitable for the field of building materials that require strong adhesion, and the low viscosity type (25mPa·s) is suitable for instant products that require rapid dispersion.
Economic efficiency and safety constitute a double guarantee. The raw materials of Methyl Cellulose come from renewable wood or cotton linters, which is in line with the concept of sustainable development; Methyl Cellulose has significant environmental friendliness. A closed-loop circulation process is used in the production process, and the discharge of three wastes is reduced by 60% compared with the traditional process, and the degradation products have no cumulative toxicity to the environment.
The potential for technological innovation injects momentum into the sustainable development of Methyl Cellulose. Modification research focuses on the development of amphiphilic derivatives, which enhance interfacial activity by introducing hydrophobic groups; nanofibrillation treatment can significantly improve mechanical properties and show application prospects in the field of flexible electronic substrates.
