Ferrocene is an organometallic compound with the formula C10H10Fe. It consists of two cyclic cyclopentadiene (C5H5) ligands connected by covalent bonds to one iron ion (Fe2+). Structurally, ferrocene can be identified by two parallel cyclopentadiene rings encasing this central iron atom – known as its sandwich structure due to the iron atom in between these rings.
